How to make (or "bake") a Baby Diaper Cake

Here's a different kind of recipe.  The crafty kind!  Diaper cakes seem very popular right now.  I've seen several sellers and online stores carrying them, and there are helpful how-to videos available on the web, too.

This recipe is intentionally pretty vague.  What I love about crafts is we have the freedom to choose any materials we like and then create something unique and personalized.

Ingredients
  • Diapers (50-100 is a good start, but the quantity you need will vary)
  • Rubber bands of various sizes
  • Decorative ribbon
  • Wooden dowels
  • Baby items (toys, blankets, towels, spoons, pacifiers, baby care products, etc.)
  • Cake plate

Directions
  1. Roll the individual diapers.  You can use rubber bands, tape, etc. to keep them from unrolling.
  2. Use a large rubber band to hold several rolled diapers together and form a cake layer.  You may need to wiggle and re-position diapers to get the right shape, and you may need to add or remove diapers to get the right sized tier.
  3. Wrap a blanket, towel, and/or ribbon(s) around the layer to hide the rubber bands and maintain the cake’s shape.
  4. Add baby items of your choice.  These can be attached using ribbon or safety pins, or you can tuck them into the cake.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 – 4 for however many cake tiers you need.
  6. Stack the tiers and vertically insert wooden dowels to hold them together.
  7. Serve on a cake plate.
